So far, there are 7 NPCs and 24 villagers you can recruit. Unlike Animal Crossing, it doesn’t seem like there is a limit to the number of animals you can have in town, other than the limit of animals in the game. Hokko has seen better days, but with your help you can bring new villagers and new life to the town. In Hokko Life, you play as a young person (androgynous but customizable) who falls asleep on a train and winds up in the cozy hamlet of Hokko. Instead, it sets itself apart as more of a casual sandbox hybrid of Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing. Hokko Life doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel here. Those games take a lot of resources and polish, plus they are a unique idea that is a little difficult to replicate. However, if players are looking for a new life simulation experience, Hokko Life will likely not provide the depth or addicting fun they’re looking for.It is rare to see Indie developers try to take on franchises like Animal Crossing. The customizable crafting elements of the game are strong, and players can even share their designs with other players online in the game’s city center.
Hokko Life needed to unlock the compulsive secrets of the farming game loop, but it left its keys at home. And they’re doing it with greater charisma and a much better understanding of the genre. But it does mean that Hokko Life arrives precisely when dozens of games are doing what it’s doing. We truly have received an embarrassment of riches over the past few months, and the future promises many more.
